Marcel van Nieuwenhoven
October 29 1968 - May 13, 2000

On May the 13th a large explosion happened in a fireworks factory in Enschede in the Netherlands. Marcel, a freelance cameraman was one of the first to arrive on the scene. It is believed that he perished when a second explosion took place. He was filming for Radio Twente Internet

It's with great sadness that we received news of Miguel's and Marcel's death. I personally did not know Miguel well, I had only crossed paths with him while covering the fall of Zaire, but it saddens all of us here to see a fellow cameramen lose his life while trying to tell the stories of the world to the rest of us. Marcel, I never had the fortune of meeting but I am sure he will be greatly missed. Miguel died in a country that took away another colleague and friend not that long ago. Myles Tierney was killed in Sierra Leone in January 1999.

Our condolences go out to Miguel's and Marcel's families and friends.

Cameraman Robbie Wright took these pictures of Miguel in Kosovo in October 1998. The pictures are of Miguel taking some of the pictures that won him the 1998 Rory Peck award.
