Photos from the Past

Does anyone remember working with these Bosch 'lightweight' cameras?. They were extremely front heavy, had a green viewfinder tube and seemed to spend most of the day with an engineer and an assortment of line-up charts. This photo was taken in 1978 at Birmingham University (UK). As well as this camera we were using a 5 camera (Philips) unit. We were making a modern musical called "Curriculae Curricula". Chris Farlow played the lead and Magnus Magnuson had a cameo role. The audio was recorded in stereo. Since it was before the days of stereo TV there was a simul-cast on radio and TV. You needed to position the speakers from your HiFi either side of the TV and tune to Radio 3. I keep waiting for it to appear again on an obscure satellite channel. Brian Cave

The shot of Bruce Hogan was taken around the same time that Leonard's picture was taken (see below)

"This was the beginning of the end of using film for news gathering. But a long way from today's camcorders, we used to carry a portable 1" recorder and a truck load of batteries to keep power up to this RCA TK 76 tube camera. The RCA TK 76 is one of the first (ENG) cameras ever built. I remember covering a court case with known Mafia criminals here in Sydney when one of their heavies charged at me and knocked the camera off my shoulder. In those days the only way to hold the camera was with a pistol grip connected to the lens, this snapped and the camera hit the deck. The story made the news that evening but the registration of the tubes was never quite the same for a long time" Bruce

The shot of Leonard Zech was taken around 1980 when he was a brash young News Cinematographer for a local Sydney TV Station. Great camera light.

"Yes! we still shot News on film up until around 1982 .. when the 'Phony' BetaScams came in .. (yuck!)." Leonard
