In 1995, Ikegami unveiled the first Editcam, a disk based camera/recorder. Instead of using the t raditional tape format Ikegami employed a hard disk as the recording medium. In combination with Avid's nonlinear editing system, Ikegami achieved to implement the whole process of video acquisition, to editing, to on-air.
This following specifications are provided by Ikegami.
The Editcam II, both DNS-21W and DNS-201W are newly designed compact camcorder in Avid/Ikegami DNG family, employing Hard Disk Drives as a recording medium in a digital non-linear environment.
Also newly designed compact, pocket-sized FieldPak called FP-S4 and newly designed circuits make the compact and lightweight camcorder body possible, without sacrificing many useful features of the Editcam system such as,
* Instant preview through random access
* Intelligent recording
* Good picture quality of 4:2:2, 13.5MHz sampling at 8bit quantization
* Retroloop function
* Timelapse recording
Editing function can be performed with an externally connected laptop computer.
The camera section employs high performance 520,000 pixel CCD's and digital processing circuit to obtain superb picture quality and an excellent signal-to-noise ratio.
It inherits Ikegami's high quality digital process color camera technology and combines this with a sturdy magnesium body and rock solid stability. Yet, its new design reduces its size and weight by 20% compared to the DNS-11 and DNS-101, and make it almost the same size as the HL-V77 series DVCPro camcorders.
Power consumption has been improved from 40 watts to 30 watts (depending on operation conditions). The camera is ergonomically designed, with the most frequently used knobs and switches in easy to access position. A laptop PC can be externally connected and used to control the DNS-21W/201W for editing via an optional Remote User Interface software.
Features
· High Picture Quality: AVR-70BH: 720x576 Pixels, 4:2:2 sampling, 13.5Mhz sampling frequency with 8bit quantization and M-JPEG compression algorithm
· DV-native compression from Year 2000 The hardware of the new EDITCAM is prepared to accept DV-native compression algorithms.
· No more digitizing time / zero time delay for non-linear editing
· Instant Preview through random access
· Intelligent Recording Function This special feature prevents the system from recording accidentally over other material. Even in the playback mode, the system can start recording instantly and all new data will be recorded into a new clip on the empty space of the FieldPak.
· No Wear & Tear / Reduced Maintenance Costs
· High Reliability
· Retroloop Function Recording in a pre-set time loop (user selectable between 5 sec and 3 min) whilst waiting for an event to happen. After the event has happened and the >REC-START< button is pressed, the pre-recorded time-loop is joined seamlessly to the scene actually being shot. You will never again miss the decisive moment....
· Single-Frame-/ Timelapse Recording This feature is unique in the world for a video camera and only possible with such a nonlinear system opening the horizon for a variety of effects which have previously always required the use of a movie-film camera.
· Editing function Hard-Cuts and L-Cuts can be performed via an external laptop computor. The camera section employs high performance 600,000 pixel CCDs (DNS-21W with 2/3“-FIT CCDs and DNS-201W with 2/3“-IT-CCDs) in 16:9/4:3 switchable aspect ratio. The camcorders employ digital processing circuits (newly developed ASICs) to obtain superb picture quality paired with an excellent signal to noise ratio. It inherits Ikegami’s high quality digital process color camera technology and combines this with a sturdy magnesium body and rock solid stability. The most remarkable features of the new EDITCAM-Camcorder generation are:
· Substantial Weight Reduction (- 18% compared to the DNS-101)
· Size Reduction (-17% compared to the DNS-101)
· Reduced Power Consumption (-33% compared to the DNS-101)
· Ease of Operation (improved operability of the recording section)
· New FieldPak-Design with 4 GB recording capacity (around 25~30 min in AVR-70BH quality level)
· Substantial weight and size reduction of the new FieldPak-Type (about 80% reduction compared to the previous type) with even lower weight and size compared to a 30-min Betacam-SP-Cassette.
